SOCIAL CONDITIONS WHICH LEAD TO INSURRECTIONIST ACTIVITIES IN BLACK URBAN COMMUNITIES AND MAJOR TRENDS IN THE STRATEGY OF THE BLACK CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
Abstract
RIOTS ARE EXPLAINED AS REACTIONS TO FAILURE BY AUTHORITIES TO RECOGNIZE LEGITIMATE GRIEVANCES AND ACT ON SOLUTIONS. INSURRECTIONIST AND REBELLIOUS ACTIVITIES ARE SEEN TO DEVELOP FROM THE FOLLOWING CIRCUMSTANCESCLOSED CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION WITH AUTHORITIES, THE FAILURE OF NON-VIOLENT PROTEST, AND THE PRESENCE OF PERSONS SKILLED IN THE TECHNIQUES OF INSURRECTION WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. THE AUTHOR ADVANCES THE THEORY THAT BLACK AMERICANS ARE CURRENTLY FACED WITH THREE DIFFERENT COURSES OF ACTION TO CORRECT SOCIAL INJUSTICES - NON-VIOLENT PROTEST, THE NEW POLITICAL MOVEMENT WHICH SEEKS BLACK CONTROL OF THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND ECONOMIC INSTITUTIONS IN BLACK COMMUNITIES, AND THE INSURRECTIONIST MOVEMENT WHICH EMPLOYS VIOLENCE TO INSTIGATE CHANGE.
