A summary discussion and transcripts of papers presented at a 2-day conference examine terrorism and political violence against government and business both in England and abroad.
Abstract
Section 1 presents a review of conference presentations and group discussions. Although the focus is on terrorism and its future trends, the spectrum of dissent and political violence, including protest demonstrations, industrial conflict, and riots, is covered. The nature of terrorism (state, domestic, and international) and terrorists is delineated; future trends in terrorist tactics, targets and weapons technology are assessed. A consideration of security examines special problems posed in a libertarian society, discusses government policy and response, and provides guidelines for corporate response. Section 2 provides a series of regional assessments of the terrorist threat in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, Africa south of the Sahara, Latin America, and Asia. Finally, section 3 contains resource papers on terrorism in West Germany and Italy, counterterrorism in Britain, British responses to several incidents of political violence, public attitudes, and international cooperation. Index and 62-item bibliography.
