THREE LEADING SCHOLARS IN THE FIELD OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PRESENT THEIR VIEWS ON THE ANTICIPATED ROLES OF POLICE OFFICERS, JUDGES, ATTORNEYS, AND CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS.
Abstract
THESE POSITION PAPERS PREDICT GRADUAL RATHER THAN DRAMATIC CHANGES IN EACH OF THEIR AREAS. MANY OF THE PRESENT-DAY TRENDS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INCREASED EMPHASIS ON POLICE PROFESSIONALISM AND HIGHER STANDARDS, RESOLUTION OF MORE DISPUTES OUT OF COURT, USE OF EXPERT ADVICE AND TESTIMONY, AND A GRADUAL CHANGE IN THE ETHNIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CORRECTIONAL POPULATION, MAKING IT MORE LIKE THE GENERAL POPULATION THAN IT IS AT PRESENT. OTHER PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE INCLUDE MORE USE OF EX-OFFENDERS IN CORRECTIONS, PROGRESS IN PRISON EDUCATION AND TRAINING, AND INCREASED AVAILABILITY OF TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES.
