THE DIFFERENCES IN SUBSTANCE AND ORIENTATION BETWEEN PROGRAMS OFFERED WITHIN AND OUTSIDE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENTS ARE POINTED OUT.
Abstract
PROGRAMS WITHIN SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENTS ARE GENERALLY AIMED AT PROVIDING THE STUDENT WITH A GENERAL BACKGROUND IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, WHEREAS PROGRAMS BASED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENTS EMPHASIZE ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES AND CRIMINALISTICS IN A MORE JOBORIENTED APPROACH. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM WHICH WOULD PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE PRACTICAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR JOBS AVAILABLE IN THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME GIVE THEM A THOROUGH GROUNDING IN THE SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF CRIME CAUSATION AND METHODS OF CONTROL.
