Because the number of gangs has doubled in the area covered by the San Diego, California, Police Department's Southern Division, an antigang program has been developed: the Cops Helping Individual Life Development (CHILD) program that targets children too old for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
Abstract
Devised and taught by police patrol officers, the CHILD program shows young people alternatives to gang life and graphically portrays the consequences of gang life and poor life choices. The CHILD program offers strong role models, draws on a range of community resources, involves parents, and teaches life skills. Specific activities initiated to deal with juvenile gangs in the San Diego area are noted, and the effectiveness of the CHILD program is demonstrated. 3 photographs
