This book examines the interconnectedness of all social systems in a community and the need for coordinated effort among those systems to address the gang problem.
Abstract
Addressing the gang problem requires coordinated effort among community agencies, the justice system, schools, government programs, and most of the citizens. Organizing the citizens, especially at the neighborhood level so as to influence all institutions, is the primary emphasis of the book. Suggestions are offered for citizens' groups to look at critical areas about schooling, incarceration, law enforcement, community programs, and their relationships to each other. The book is presented in eight chapters: (1) Youth Gangs Now and Then; (2) The Emergence of Gangs in Green Cities; (3) Areas of Misunderstanding; (4) Approaches That Do Not Work; (5) In Search of a Miracle: Our Part; (6) Energizing and Organizing the Community; (7) Organizing Topics: Helping Youth to Stay Out of Gangs; and (8) Organizing Topics: Responding to Gang Members.
