This report from the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety presents an assessment of gang activity in the State.
Abstract
Highlights from this report regarding the status of gangs and gang membership in North Carolina as of January 1, 2011 include: there were 12,845 individuals identified as gang member, with an additional 3,500 inmates in Department of Corrections facilities that met the security threat group validation for being affiliated with a gang; 93 percent of gang members in the State were male and 7 percent were female; 3 percent of gang members in the western portion of the State were Asian, with a large portion being centered around Charlotte; 29 percent of the gang members in the western portion of the State were Hispanic, yet they accounted for only 16 percent of gang members in the eastern portion of the State; and Black gang members accounted for 75 percent of the membership in the eastern portion of the State and 57 percent of the membership in the western portion of the State. This report from the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety presents an assessment of gang activity in the State as of January 1, 2011. Data for this report were obtained from the North Carolina GangNET databases. The databases include information from 231 law enforcement agencies providing information on gang members operating in the State's 57 counties. Tables and figures
