THIS STUDY DEALS WITH THE SYMBOLIC EFFECT THAT PUNISHMENT MAY HAVE ON POTENTIAL CRIMINALS, I.E., GENERAL DETERRENCE - SPECIFICALLY FOR THE CASES OF BANK ROBBERY AND DRAFT EVASION.
Abstract
THE AVAILABLE EVIDENCE ON GENERAL DETERRENCE IS REVIEWED AND CRITIQUED. A STRONG NEGATIVE ASSOCIATION IS FOUND BETWEEN THE PROBABILITY OF CONVICTION AND THE DRAFT EVASION RATE. NO CONSISTENTLY NEGATIVE ASSOCIATIONS ARE FOUND BETWEEN ANY OF THE SANCTION VARIABLES AND THE BANK ROBBERY RATE WHICH COULD BE JUDGED AS INDICATING THE DETERRENT EFFICACY OF THAT SANCTION.
