THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF GENERALIST INVESTIGATORS AND DETECTIVE/SPECIALIST INVESTIGATORS ARE DISCUSSED IN LIGHT OF PORTLAND/MULTNOMAH COUNTY'S (OR) RECENT DESPECIALIZATION MOVE.
Abstract
THE PATROLMAN GENERALIST INVESTIGATOR SCHEME IS PARTICULARLY WELL-SUITED TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD TEAM POLICING CONCEPT USED IN PORTLAND. OTHER ADVANTAGES INCLUDE FASTER FOLLOW-UP ON CASES AND BETTER INITIAL SCREENING. ONE OF THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DESPECIALIZATION SCHEMES IS THE PERCEIVED STATUS-LEVEL REDUCTION ON THE PART OF THE FORMER SPECIALISTS.
