The study suggests a model evaluation plan for outdoor rehabilitation programs, which aim at intrapersonal change in juvenile delinquents.
Abstract
This plan assumes three goals for the program: positive changes in self-esteem, short-term behavior, and personal value orientation. Instruments used by researchers to measure the three goals vary with the individual researcher. Several are identified. The design selected for the evaluation, the Institutional Cycle Design, controls for all sources of internal validity except the interaction of selection with other sources, and possibly regression. Also discussed are program implementation, detection of short-term charge, detection of long-term effects, and alternate effects (evidence suggesting that various characteristics of the subjects will predetermine the effect that the program will have on the individual). Data for measuring the implementation of the plan is best obtained by participant observation or field research by researchers familiar with past outdoor rehabilitation programs, but not responsible for implementing the one studied. This model plan uses only a small number of subjects. 2 footnotes, 12 references, and 1 figure.
