THE DESIGN FOR A GEOGRAPHIC BASE FILE (GBF) WITH MINICOMPUTERS IS DESCRIBED. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE GBF THAT WAS DEVELOPED FOR DADE COUNTY, FLA., POLICE.
Abstract
ADVICE IS OFFERED ON THE ADVANTAGES OF THE MINICOMPUTER OVER A LARGER COMPUTER, ON CHOICE OF FILE STRUCTURE (EXACT ADDRESS, SEGMENTED BASE FILE, AND SPAN FILE), AND ON CHOICE OF FILE ACCESS METHOD. THE EXAMPLE OF DADE COUNTY'S GBF IS USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE USE OF A SEGMENTED BASE FILE STRUCTURE AND ITS RESPONSE TO SIZE VERSUS STORAGE, TO THE COMPUTER-AIDED DISPATCH FUNCTION, AND TO ANY EXISTING FILES. TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON DADE COUNTY'S SYSTEM REFERS TO THE COMPUTER LANGUAGE, THE SIZE OF THE DISKS AND RECORDS, AND INFORMATION STORAGE ACCORDING TO THE GBF GRID. THE ACCESSING METHOD AND THE SEARCH PROCESS ARE DISCUSSED. AN APPENDIX FURTHER ILLUSTRATES THE SEARCH PROCESS. (MHP)
