A REVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPERATIONS OF THE VARIOUS UNITS AND SECTIONS OF THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY DURING 1976 IS PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH A STATISTICAL SUMMARY OF TRAFFIC SAFETY DATA BY COUNTY.
Abstract
SECTIONS UNDER THE COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE INCLUDED IN THE REPORT ARE THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE, SAFETY EDUCATION, INSPECTIONAL SERVICES, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, DRIVERS SERVICES, SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY, IMPLIED CONSENT, VERIFICATION UNIT, THE NO-FAULT AND PERMITS SECTION, MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION, MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY, AND CHAPLAINS. INFORMATION ON THE GEORGIA STATE PATROL DIVISION FIELD TROOPS IS PRESENTED BY OPERATING UNITS. THE MANPOWER TRAINING PROGRAM AT THE GEORGIA POLICE ACADEMY IS ALSO REVIEWED. HIGHLIGHTS OF 1976 HAVE INCLUDED CONTINUING REDUCTIONS IN TRAFFIC FATALITIES AND IN ALCOHOL-RELATED TRAFFIC INJRIES AND FATALITIES. THESE REDUCTIONS ARE ATTRIBUTABLE IN PART TO THE REDUCED SPEED LIMITS, GREATER PUBLIC AWARENESS AIDED BY A MEDIA TRAFFIC SAFETY CAMPAIGN, AND STRICTER ENFORCEMENT OF AND STIFFER PENALTIES FOR DRUNK AND RECKLESS DRIVING OFFENSES. STATE TROOPERS HAVE BEEN GIVEN EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRAINING AND ARE NOW PROVIDED WITH FIRST AID KITS IDENTICAL TO THOSE USED BY PARAMEDICS. THE USE OF CITIZEN'S BAND RADIOS IN PATROL CARS HAVE PROVEN TO BE OF INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE TO BOTH MOTORISTS AND TROOPERS. AS A RESULT OF AN ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC DATA INDICATING THAT 94 PERCENT OF TRAFFIC DEATHS AND INJURIES OCCURRED ON RURAL TWO-LANE ROADS, GREATER PATROL VISIBILITY ON THESE ROADS WAS INAUGURATED. A TABULAR SUMMARY OF TRAFFIC SAFETY STATISTICS PRESENTING DATA ON ARRESTS, WARNINGS, ACCIDENTS, DISPOSITIONS/CONVICTIONS, AND FINES BY COUNTY AND AN ORGANIZATIONAL CHART ARE PROVIDED. (JAP)
