This report summarizes public safety activities and traffic accident statistics in Georgia during 1990.
Abstract
The report outlines the organization and responsibilities of the Georgia Department of Public Safety Deputy Commissioner's Office, State Patrol Division, Driver Services Division, Personnel Services Division, and Fiscal Division. In 1990, 1,564 people were killed in traffic accidents in Georgia, a decrease of 4.2 percent from 1989 figures. Thirty- four percent of traffic fatalities involved a drinking driver, while 8.8 percent involved a driver under the influence of other drugs. Georgia troopers made 15,356 arrests for driving under the influence, while the Department of Public Safety suspended over 124,000 licenses, revoked over 15,000, and cancelled over 3,700. There were 178 pedestrian fatalities during the reporting period; nearly half involved pedestrians crossing between crosswalks or marked intersections. The summer months were the deadliest in terms of traffic accident fatalities.
