THE TRAINING STANDARDS AND COURSES OF POLICE EDUCATION PROMULGATED BY THE GEORGIA PEACE OFFICER STANDARDS AND TRAINING COUNCIL ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
TO ADAPT TO THE CHANGING REQUIREMENTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND TO PROVIDE FOR QUALITY TRAINING FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL, THE BASIC COURSE OF TRAINING WAS REVISED AND PROMULGATED BY THE GEORGIA PEACE OFFICER STANDARDS AND TRAINING COUNCIL. THE REVISED CURRICULUM PERMITS REASONABLE LATITUDE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LESSON CONTENT BY THE TRAINING PRACTITIONERS, AND SPECIFIES ONLY THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF HOURS CONSIDERED NECESSARY FOR TRAINING IN THE REQUIRED TOPICS. AN INSTRUCTIONAL BLOCK OF 14 HOURS OF ELECTIVE UNITS IS PROVIDED IN THE INTEREST OF FLEXIBILITY TO BE USED TO COMPLEMENT THE NEEDS OF LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. ELECTIVE SUBJECTS INCLUDE CRIMINAL INTELLIGENCE, ORGANIZED CRIME, TRAFFIC DIRECTION, AND THE DEVELOPING OF LATENT FINGERPRINTS. REQUIRED COURSES OF STUDY ARE DIVIDED INTO FIVE SECTIONS. THE INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE SECTION INCLUDES STUDIES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT COORDINATION AND POLICE ETHICS. THE COURSE IN BASIC LAW COVERS BOTH FEDERAL CONSTITUTIONAL LAW AND THE GEORGIA STATE STATUTES. COMMUNITY RELATIONS COURSES INCLUDE TRAINING IN INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS AND IN THE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF MENTALLY RETARDED PERSONS. POLICE PROCEDURES COVER AND EMPHASIZE METHODS OF PATROL AND OBSERVATION, POLICE REPORTS, INVESTIGATIONS, AND CRIME PREVENTION. THE TRAINING IN POLICE SKILLS CONSISTS OF QUALIFICATION AND FAMILIARIZATION WITH SERVICE WEAPONS, AND DISCUSSION OF THE LEGAL AND MORAL LIMITATIONS GOVERNING THE USE OF FIREARMS. ADDITIONAL TRAINING IS MANDATED IN THE AREAS OF ARREST PROCEDURE, FIRST AID, AND COURTROOM DEMEANOR. (TWK)
