Georgia's Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is the first to combine the computerized processing of criminal histories with the automated identification of fingerprints.
Abstract
New criminal history records or updates of existing records are generated online for all offenders as their fingerprint cards are processed through AFIS. In addition, 1,000 reports of final dispositions of criminal charges are now processed each day. The computers and optical disks store the fingerprints of more than 1,000,000 prior offenders. A second file, the Latent Cognizant File, has been created for latent print searches. It contains all 10 fingerprints of prior offenders who are under age 40 and whose records reflect one or more arrests for murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft, or drug offenses.
