THE HESSEN (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY) TRAINING SCHOOL FOR POLICE DOGS AND THEIR MASTERS IS DESCRIBED. THE SCHOOL TRAINS AROUND 50 DOGS ANNUALLY TO BE USED BY POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN FRANKFURT AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.
Abstract
THE DOG TRAINING SCHOOL, IN OPERATION SINCE 1954, CONSISTS OF A BUILDING, A LARGE TRAINING FIELD WITH A TRACK, AND SEVERAL SMALL SPARRING AND RUNNING FIELDS, FOUR OF WHICH ARE LOCATED INSIDE THE BUILDING. THE SCHOOL OWNS TWO SMALL BUSES AND A LARGE DOG WAGON. POLICE PERSONNEL WHO ENROLL IN THE SCHOOL TO LEARN TO WORK WITH AND TRAIN THE DOGS RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS IN POLICE TACTICS, DOG CARE, AND DOG TRAINING AND POLICE-DOG WORK. THEY ALSO TAKE REFRESHER COURSES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PSYCHOLOGY. THE 11-WEEK FOUNDATION COURSE IS FOLLOWED BY A SERIES OF TESTS. SUCCESSFUL DOGS AND THEIR LEADERS THEN CONTINUE WITH A 4-WEEK ADVANCED COURSE. GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 1 AND 2.5 YEARS ARE PURCHASED BY THE SCHOOL FROM PRIVATE DEALERS, ALTHOUGH SOME LABRADOR RETRIEVERS ARE SELECTED FOR TRAINING IN NARCOTICS SEARCHING. THE DOGS ARE SEPARATED INTO THE CATEGORIES OF TRACKING OR DEFENSE DOGS AND ARE TRAINED IN RUNNING AND RETRIEVING, TRACKING, ATTACKING, AND OBEDIENCE. --IN DANISH. (DAG)
