THIS STUDY TRACES THE SOCIALIZATION OF VOLUNTEER AND PROFESSIONAL CORRECTIONAL WORKERS, FOCUSING ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CORRECTIONAL WORKERS' CAREERS IN AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE CORRECTIONAL ENTERPRISE.
Abstract
PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION DATA WERE COLLECTED FOR TWO YEARS IN UNSTRUCTURED AND STAFF INITIATED STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS. BECAUSE REHABILITATIVE ASPECTS OF CORRECTIONS ARE BASED ON SUPERFICIAL AND ANTIQUATED CONCEPTUALIZATIONS OF THE OFFENDERS' INHERITED MALADIES, CORRECTIONAL WORKERS FAIL TO ACHIEVE REHABILITATIVE GOALS AND FEEL THEY HAVE BEEN IDEOLOGICALLY CHEATED. AS A RESULT THEY ACQUIESCE TO THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF PUBLIC PROTECTION THROUGH INCARCERATION OF OFFENDERS. AS A RESULT THE WORKERS BECOME WORN DOWN OR 'BURNED OUT.'(AUTHOR ABSTACT MODIFIED)...TWH
