This self-instructional workbook aims to help police personnel strengthen their ability to obtain a promotion and succeed on promotional tests.
Abstract
The manual consists primarily of structured exercises that require the reader to apply knowledge and writing skills in a practical way that will be parallel to promotional testing. The manual urges the user to take on the role of a candidate who is committed to being selected for a particular position and willing to prepare for the rigors of a promotional test. The first chapter presents exercises to help readers determine why they want to be promoted, whether they should try to be promoted, and whether they could be promoted if they try. The next chapter covers inaction, action, action planning, and methods of overcoming the uncertainties attached to being examined. Further chapters focus on the resume, written examinations, panel interviews, role-play situations, simulations, assessment centers, speeches and group exercises used in assessment centers, in-basket exercises, and the promotional examination. Exercises, charts, sample materials, and appended materials from assessment centers
