This document summarizes workshops presented at a 1-day town meeting held in Minneapolis, in October 1994, which focused on various aspects of parenting.
Abstract
The first session discussed the lack of a national policy on families and children, and the need for community values in child-rearing as many children have two parents who work outside the home. The second presentation discussed the rise in juvenile delinquency, attributed by the speaker to a breakdown in values. In particular, the trend toward violent entertainment reflects the fact that society values money over the well-being of its children. Other speakers addressed workplace issues related specifically to the family, models of parent education, education in life skills for schoolchildren, and male responsibilities of parenthood.
