This instructional manual describes effective techniques for physically controlling suspects and prisoners.
Abstract
Among techniques described are the hand control, the come-along hold, the two-hand takedown, cross-hand passing techniques, and the carotid submission hold. Tactics using handcuffs in the control of opponents also are described, as are a variety of techniques for disarming opponents with firearms and knives. Baton strike and nonstrike zones are enumerated, a standard baton drill is presented, and two techniques using the baton are described. Instructions provide information on situations in which the techniques are useful, describe the suspect's or opponent's behaviors, provide suggested verbal communications to accompany techniques, and outline the body movements necessary to each technique. The utility of a written report in justifying police officers' self-defense tactics is briefly discussed.
