This report provides a brief overview of the activities of the Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking, which was launched by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in March 2007, in order to promote collaboration among a range of regional and international organizations, the private sector, and civil society in mounting international action against human trafficking.
Abstract
In accordance with decisions 16/1 and 16/2 of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the UNODC held a series of consultative meetings in which member states provided guidance for the Global Initiative and for a major international event, the Vienna Forum, to be held February 13-15, 2008. In addition, a steering committee met regularly to coordinate the activities of the Global Initiative among its members, based on guidance from member states. As part of the Global Initiative, a series of events designed to focus attention on various aspects of the human trafficking problem were held in 2007, and several expert group meetings were held to develop training material and other products intended to assist governments, civil society, the business community, international organizations, and other relevant actors in implementing measures to prevent and combat human trafficking. Information is also provided on the research component of the Global Initiative. Among the recommendations offered in this report is one that encourages member states to promote the use of the wide array of tools and assistance offered by the UNODC for preventing and countering human trafficking.
