Information from interviews and records of case handling, court decisions, and reported offenses formed the basis of an analysis of whether environmental crimes in Sweden are being detected and handled in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act and the goals of penal law.
Abstract
The analysis used a national survey of court decisions and reported offenses for 1983-88; a process evaluation concerning the handling of oversight cases in certain regions during 1986; and results of an interview study. The analysis focused on the nature and causes of environmental crime, its seriousness, the difficulties in using criminal law to create a better environment, and areas appropriate for criminalization.
