This booklet is designed to help persons sentenced to prison to prepare for and make the adjustment to prison, such that the incarceration period is minimally psychologically and physically harmful.
Abstract
Guidance for pre-prison preparation focuses on that period between the imposition of the prison sentence and entrance into the facility. Topics considered are matters to be discussed with the assigned probation officer, the calculation of potential incarceration time, taking care of health needs, the selection of a prison (if this is an option), and transportation to prison. Guidelines for adjustment to prison life first focus on what to bring to prison. A list of what most prisons allow inmates to bring with them to prison and to keep are listed. The value of various items for prison life are noted. A review of general prison rules and regulations is followed by guidelines for personal safety. The latter include staying away from inmate crowds, not talking about your personal life or case, being courteous to prison personnel, minding your own business, avoiding quarrels with other inmates, never complaining about another inmate's behavior, and always being where you are supposed to be on time. Other guidelines pertain to the maintenance of mental health, coping with the "rumor mill," and maintaining contact with family and friends. Appended glossary of prison terms and lists of Federal correctional institutions and camps as well as community corrections management offices (halfway houses)
