Since its inception, the Indiana Task Force to Reduce Drunk Driving has been instrumental in changes in drunk driving policy and prevention.
Abstract
Through legislative recommendations, direct grants, public awareness activities, research, corporate outreach, and teen drunk driving programs, the task force has been able to communicate the intricacies of the problem and to solicit innovative solutions from the State's citizens. Among activities to these ends have been grant awards to high school organizations involved in drunk driving prevention, development of films, establishment of a student advisory board, public hearings, and information and enforcement campaings. In addition, the task force has aided in the implementation of two legislative measures: the reinstatement of fees assessed to convicted drunk drivers, and the enforcement submission of the probable cause affidavit. Research efforts have examined arrest and adjudication of drunk drivers, drunk driver recidivist penalties, alcohol involvement in serious traffic accidents, community service sentences for driving under the influence convictions, and public opinion on drunk driving.
