Abstract
Section I on juror service first considers grand juries, noting that overall grand jury activity increased during the reporting period. Tables show the number of grand juries serving, service data such as jurors in session and hours in session, duration of grand juries discharged, proceedings by indictment, and grand jury session convened and indicted. This section discusses the effect of the Speedy Trial Act of 1974 and provides comparative statistics for 1979-83. Much of the petit juror data in this report is not comparable to prior years, because it reflects juror service for selection days; whereas, the previous reports reflected overall juror service. Tables on petit jurors provide 5-year summaries and breakdowns on percentage of jurors elected, challenged, and not selected, challenged, or serving. A checklist of 14 factors which affect juror statistics is included. Section II presents data on juror expenditures for attendance, mileage, subsistence, and other costs for petit and grand juries. Profiles for the 11 district courts and the District of Columbia include historical data for a 5-year period and comments on factors that affect a district's juror statistics. A profile page of 1983 national averages concludes the report. The appendixes contain a glossary and a list of most recent local rules setting the size of civil juries adopted by U.S. district courts.
