A BROAD OVERVIEW OF A NUMBER OF FACTORS INVOLVED IN PHOTO-IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS, INCLUDING SELECTION OF A PHOTO-ID SYSTEM, EQUIPMENT FOR PRODUCING PHOTO ID'S, AND SECURITY FAILURES IN PHOTO-IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS.
Abstract
IT IS NOTED THAT PHOTO-IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS HAVE THE FOLLOWING BASIC COMPONENTS: SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT USED TO PROCESS A FINISHED ID CARD; THE PHOTO ID CARD; AND AN OPTIONAL CARD READER. THREE TYPES OF CARDS ARE GENERALLY AVAILABLE, AND EACH HAS ITS OWN ADVANTAGES IN TERMS OF COST, SECURITY, AND EASE OF PRODUCTION. THESE TYPES INCLUDE THE PAPER INSERT CARD, THE ALL-PHOTO INSERT CARD, AND THE ALL-PLASTIC CARD. EXAMPLES OF THE METHODS USED TO FALSIFY THE FIRST TWO CARD TYPES ARE PROVIDED. WHILE CONCLUDING THAT THE ALL-PLASTIC CARD IS THE MOST DURABLE AND SECURE, THE AUTHOR ALSO NOTES THAT THE SECURITY OF ALL ID CARDS IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE CONTROLS AND ENFORCEMENT USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PHOTO-IDENTIFICATION....DMC
