The primary objectives of the Greenwich Junior Citizen Award Scheme, which illustrates an inter-agency training initiative on crime prevention and personal safety, are to help children avoid becoming the victims of crime, develop social awareness and good citizenship, cope effectively with dangerous situations, and understand the role of the police and other emergency services.
Abstract
This description outlines the procedure as well as the sets and role plays of the scheme and discusses management and staffing issues, project costs and funding sources, and program achievements and problems. The scheme, which can be adapted and modified to suit local needs, consists of eight, real-life sets which are arranged in the form of a course. At each set, the children participants are presented with several tasks and problems and are assessed on their reactions. Children are advised as to the most appropriate and sensible course of action should they be unclear about how to respond or make a mistake. Nearly 20 police forces and local authorities now operate similar schemes. 1 table
