RESEARCH TEAMS FROM THE CENTER FOR CORRECTIONAL JUSTICE EXAMINED THE OPERATIONS OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE MECHANISMS IN OVER THIRTY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND ASSESSED THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND PROBLEMS.
Abstract
THE RISE OF JUDICIAL INTERVENTION IN CORRECTIONS, INCREASED MILITANCY OF SOPHISTICATED INMATE POPULATIONS, AND EXPANDING MANAGEMENT SKILL ON THE PART OF CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTERS ALL HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXPLOSION OF INTEREST IN GRIEVANCE MECHANISMS. THE STUDY CONCLUDED THAT PRISON STAFF DISGRUNTLEMENT CAN BE ESPECIALLY SEVERE WHEN THE NEW MECHANISM FOR INMATES' GRIEVANCES IS TRANSPARENTLY SUPERIOR TO THAT FOR DEALING WITH EMPLOYEES' COMPLAINTS.
