REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF PUBLISHED STUDIES DEALING WITH FACTORS AFFECTING THE COMMISSION OF DELINQUENT ACTS.
Abstract
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OFFICIAL AND SELF-REPORTED MEASURES OF DELINQUENCY IS EXAMINED ALONG WITH THE GROUP CONTEXT OF DELINQUENT ACTS. GROUP CONTEXT IS DISCUSSED IN TWO MAJOR PARTS. THE FIRST PART DEALS WITH THE GROUP CONTEXT OF DELINQUENCY IN GENERAL, THE GROUP HAZARD HYPOTHESIS, AND ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENTIAL PROBABILITIES OF ARRESTS AND INCARCERATION ASSOCIATED WITH VIOLATING IN GROUPS. THE SECOND PART IS CONCERNED WITH THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND THE COMMISSION OF GROUP VIOLATION AND THE OCCURRENCE OF OFFICIAL JUVENILE COURT REFERRALS. THE SUBCULTURAL AND SITUATIONAL CONTEXT OF DELINQUENT ACT IS COVERED. THE MAJOR THEORETICAL ISSUES OF EACH TOPIC ARE DISCUSSED AND A SUMMARY OF THE MAJOR FINDINGS IS PRESENTED. THE RESEARCH SUMMARIZED IS NEARLY ALL BASED ON A DATA SET WHICH INCLUDED WITHIN ITS SCOPE BOTH OFFICIAL AND SELF-REPORTED MEASURES OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR AND A VARIETY OF STANDARD SOCIOLOGICAL VARIABLES, SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS, AGE, AND OFFICIAL DELINQUENCY CATEGORIES. REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
