In providing guidance on best practices for Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), this report focuses on options for the "best practice" of unsolicited reporting of PDMP data to prescribers, dispensers, licensing boards, and law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
Unsolicited reports from a PDMP on patients who meet criteria for possible inappropriate prescription drug use are typically sent to medical providers or law enforcement agencies, depending on a State's policies and PDMP statutes. Some PDMPs also provide reports to licensing boards and law enforcement agencies regarding prescribers who fall outside the norms of their medical specialty for prescribing controlled substances. This report provides examples of these types of unsolicited reporting, including selection and reporting mechanisms, for a sample of States. Also included in this report are examples of promising practices and innovations in unsolicited reporting. These examples provide many options for States to consider in planning for this PDMP best practice.
