This guide profiles five juvenile substance abuse treatment programs and provides guidelines on the development of such treatment programs.
Abstract
The guide begins with an overview of the link between substance abuse and delinquency, including an indepth examination of substance abuse trends among incarcerated youth. This is followed by a presentation of the results of a needs assessment and a survey conducted in preparation for the guide. Practical tips on how to develop a juvenile substance abuse treatment program follow the profiles of five such treatment programs. Also included is a review of research that establishes the need for aftercare as part of a continuum of treatment and a proposed model for a posttreatment program. Guidelines are recommended for evaluating services offered by substance abuse treatment programs, and current models of substance abuse treatment and their relative effectiveness are discussed. The guide also projects future developments in the field of substance abuse treatment. Glossary, national directory of alcohol and drug abuse, needs assessment form, alcohol/drug treatment program profile form, 33-item annotated bibliography.
