IN THIS FIFTH VOLUME IN THE SERIES A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PRISON INDUSTRIES, BASIC INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES AND PROCESSES INTRODUCED IN VOLUME FOUR ARE APPLIED TO THE MANUFACTURE OF FURNITURE.
Abstract
STEP-BY-STEP WORKING EXAMPLES OF ALL OF THE SUBFUNCTIONS WHICH MAKE UP A TOTAL MANUFACTURING PRODUCTION SYSTEM ARE GIVEN. WHILE THE WORKING EXAMPLES ARE KEYED TO FURNITURE MANUFACTURE, THEY CAN APPLY TO ANY INDUSTRY INVOLVED IN CONTINUOUS OR MIXED MANUFACTURING. A HYPOTHETICAL CHALLENGE IS PRESENTED--THE MANUFACTURE OF 75 BOOKCASES--AND THE VARIOUS STEPS IN THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF PART PRODUCT FLOWCHARTS, ROUTING FORMS, PRODUCTION SCHEDULES, OPERATION SHEETS, EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR SCHEDULES, AND QUALITY CONTROL STANDARDS ARE OUTLINED. EACH STEP IS IN TURN RELATED TO THE TOTAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM. SIMPLE AND BASIC PROCEDURES WHICH CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE PRODUCTION RATE/OUTPUT OF INDIVIDUAL WORKERS OR DIVISIONS WITHIN THE PLANT ARE ALSO OUTLINED. THROUGHOUT, VARIOUS CHARTS AND FORMS ACCOMPANY THE DISCUSSION OF PARTICULAR PRODUCTION SUBFUNCTIONS. ALONG WITH THE PRINCIPLES AND PROCEDURES, THESE CHARTS AND FORMS REPRESENT BASIC MATERIALS WHICH ARE INTEGRAL TO THE EFFICIENT OPERATION OF MOST INDUSTRIES. APPENDIXES CONTAIN GENERAL RECOMMENDED SAFETY STANDARDS FOR MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES AND BLANK COPIES OF VARIOUS FORMS USED IN SUCH INDUSTRIES. THE MANUAL ALSO CONTAINS EXTENSIVE TABULAR DATA.
