THIS SIXTH VOLUME IN THE GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PRISON INDUSTRIES SERIES APPLIES BASIC INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES AND PROCESSES TO A SERVICE INDUSTRY--PRINTING.
Abstract
THIS VOLUME, ALONG WITH ITS COMPANIONS MAKES UP A SET OF SIX VOLUMES PRESENTING TOPICS OF GENERAL INTEREST TO THE PRISON INDUSTRY COMMUNITY. AS IN THE PREVIOUS VOLUME, THIS SEGMENT PROVIDES A CONSISTENT HOW-TO STANCE WITH STEP-BY-STEP WORKING EXAMPLES OF ALL THE SUBFUNCTIONS WHICH MAKE UP A TOTAL PRINTING RUN. ALTHOUGH SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSING PRINT SHOP SUPERVISORS AND LEAD WORKERS, IT IS APPLICABLE TO OTHER PRISON INDUSTRIES. A SECTION ON DESIGNING PRODUCTION SYSTEMS PROVIDES METHODS AND MATERIALS WITH WHICH PRODUCTION PLANNING, MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING, PLANT ENGINEERING, AND QUALITY CONTROL CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER COMPLETING THE CHAPTER, READERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO ESTABLISH PRODUCT FLOWCHART AND ROUTING FORMS, DEVELOP APPROPRIATE PRODUCTION SCHEDULES, RELATE PRODUCT FLOW TO PLANT LAYOUT, MAKE MODIFICATIONS TO EQUIPMENT CONFIGURATIONS, DEVELOP AN EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR SCHEDULE, AND RELATE ALL ASPECTS OF THE PRODUCTION EFFORT TO ONE OVERALL PRODUCTION SYSTEM MODEL. THE SECOND SECTION PROVIDES METHODS AND MATERIALS RELATED TO PRODUCTION FLOW AND PLANT LAYOUT FUNCTIONS. SYSTEMS AND MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRY WORK MEASUREMENT AND PRODUCTION ANALYSIS ARE PROVIDED. EXTENSIVE TABULAR DATA, PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION CHARTS AND FORMS, FORMS AND REPORT SCHEDULES REGARDING MAINTENANCE, ORDERING, AND OTHER FUNCTIONS, AND SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS ARE INCLUDED. FOR OTHER VOLUMES IN THE SERIES SEE NCJ 60756-61 AND NCJ 87053.
