The purpose of this paper is to help staff in chemical dependency treatment programs respond to the needs of patients with AIDS or ARC (AIDS related conditions), those infected with HIV, and those at higher than normal risk for infection.
Abstract
Some basic principles for treatment or housing include not using HIV antibody testing as a screening criterion for admission, and educating staff and chemical-dependent patients about AIDS. Specific precautions to use when caring for someone with AIDS include washing hands and wearing disposable gloves when handling all body fluids. There is currently no medical reason for routine mandatory HIV antibody testing of patients in chemical dependency treatment programs. Also presented are: (1) the categories of HIV-infected persons requiring service for chemical dependency problems, (2) the involvement of family and friends of AIDS patients, (3) precautions for people with AIDS living in the community, and (4) the official medical position on treatment.
