Success for female correctional personnel requires active efforts to attain career goals, juggle professional and personal responsibilities, avoid burnout or victimization, and manage stress effectively.
Abstract
Women face attitudinal barriers and difficulties in achieving success in their correctional careers. It is important for them to set goals, periodically check their progress, and make the effort needed for effectiveness and efficiency. They must make sure that they have personal time as well as family time to deal with stress. They also need to be aware of the factors leading to burnout and use strategies such as peer support groups to deal with it. Nutrition, relaxation, exercise, talking with others, avoiding self-medication with alcohol or drugs, and avoiding isolation are also important. With proper management of their success, their possibilities for advancement are unlimited. The author was the American Correctional Association president from 1990 to 1992. Photographs
