This manual compares the use of hollow metal doors with the traditional bar-grille doors in correctional facilities and presents specifications for hollow metal systems.
Abstract
The information and comments reflect the views of representative members of the manufacturers' association. Properly designed and constructed hollow metal doors and framing systems are as secure and are more economical and generally more pleasing in appearance than the bar-grille installations. They save money both in installation and in maintenance and repair. The hollow metal doors reduce the noise that prisoners can make and prevent prisoners from hurting guards or other prisoners as they pass by. Hollow metal construction also offers flexibility in the design of cell fronts and well as security window walls, guard enclosures, and control stations. The voluntary standard established for these doors requires five tests: static load, rack, impact load, removable glazing stops, and bullet resistance. The specifications for the doors and frames cover the work to be included, testing and performance requirements, quality assurance, materials, instructions for construction, hardware, storage, and implementation.
