DESCRIPTION OF A PROGRAM WHICH ALLOWS INMATES TO EARN COLLEGE CREDITS LEADING TO AN ASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREE WHILE STILL INCARCERATED.
Abstract
THE FCC-LORTON EXTENSION COLLEGE DIFFERS FROM OTHER PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN THAT IT OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE, GOAL ORIENTATED PLAN AND NOT JUST COURSES. ALL STUDIES PURSUED AT THE LORTON COMPLEX ARE PART OF A DEGREE PROGRAM. THE MEN RECEIVE INTENSIVE COUNSELING FROM THE COLLEGE COUNSELING STAFF WHILE THEY ARE AT LORTON. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATE IN STUDENTS GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONS ON THE MAIN CAMPUS AND ARE REPRESENTED IN THE SELECTION AND EVALUATION COMMITTEE OF THE EXTENSION COLLEGE. AS A DIRECT OUTGROWTH OF THIS PHILOSOPHY, STUDENTS IN THE ON-CAMPUS PHASE OF THE PROGRAM HAVE DEVELOPED SEVERAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS IN THE AREAS OF DRUG EDUCATION, COUNSELING, AND TUTORIAL SERVICES. SOME SUBJECTS COVERED IN THIS REPORT ARE CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION, BUSSING PROGRAM, DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES AT THE COLLEGE, AND VARIOUS COUNSELING SERVICES.
