THIS BOOKLET PRESENTS RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES FOR SERVICES, POLICY, MATERIALS, AND STAFFING TO BE USED BY OREGON PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN ESTABLISHING LIBRARY SERVICES FOR INMATES OF LOCAL CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES.
Abstract
LIBRARY SERVICES SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO PRISON STAFF AND INMATES AT THE SAME LEVEL AS FOR OTHER COMMUNITY RESIDENTS, AND SHOULD BE DIRECTED BY WRITTEN LIBRARY POLICY. LIBRARY MATERIALS SHOULD INCLUDE BOOKS, REFERENCE MATERIALS, MAGAZINES, MATERIALS FOR ADULT BEGINNING READERS, AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS, GAMES, PUZZLES, AND LEGAL REFERENCE RESOURCES. JAIL LIBRARY PROGRAMS SHOULD BE SUPERVISED BY PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIANS. SERVICE INITIALLY SHOULD BE PLANNED JOINTLY BY THE PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTOR, LOCAL SHERIFF, AND THE JAIL LIBRARIAN, BUT SHOULD REFLECT EACH JAIL'S NEEDS. THESE GUIDELINES WERE ADOPTED JOINTLY BY THE OREGON LIBRARY ASSOCATION AND THE OREGON CORRECTIONS ASSOCIATION AND WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE JAIL STANDARDS PUBLISHED BY THE OREGON CORRECTIONS DIVISION. A RECOMMENDED READING LIST AND AN APPENDIX INCLUDING A SAMPLE PERIODICAL LIST AND A SAMPLE POLICY STATEMENT FROM ONE COUNTY'S JAIL ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
