The Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice developed guidelines for juvenile courts, juvenile detention facilities, and youth homes to facilitate the processing of runaways, status offenders, and abused and neglected juveniles.
Abstract
Workshops were held by Michigan's Committee on Juvenile Justice and Office of Criminal Justice to provide technical assistance to law enforcement and the juvenile justice community. Guidelines resulting from the workshops focused on the legal liability of locking up juveniles, the removal of juveniles from adult facilities, alternatives to incarcerating juveniles, the handling of status offenders, and the handling of juveniles involved in abuse and neglect cases. Guidelines also dealt with the valid court order exception in the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. The Michigan guidelines are consistent with Federal regulations. Michigan resources for runaways and for the nonsecure supervision of preadjudicated juvenile offenders are listed, along with juvenile holdover facilities in Michigan.
