The main body of criminal law regulating the use of firearms and ammunition in England and Wales is contained in the Firearms Acts of 1968 and 1982, as amended by the Firearms Act of 1988.
Abstract
The main effect of the 1988 Act is to classify as prohibited self-loading weapons, pump action rifles, short-barreled smooth bore guns, burst fire weapons, rocket launchers, and mortars. Other measures in the Act include the tightening of controls on ordinary shot guns. The legislation is examined in detail in chapters on prohibited weapons and ammunition, shot guns, air weapons, police permits, firearm licenses for museums, imitation firearms, shooting games, poaching, protected birds and animals, the shooting rights of tenants or landowners, young people and guns, general restrictions on shooting and carrying guns, and firearms dealers. Appendixes provide additional information on antique firearms, museums for which firearm licenses may be issued, seasons for shooting game and deer, wild birds and animals, and procedures to be followed by firearms dealers in registering transactions. An index and a table of statutes are included.
