This information package provides a one-stop resource for those seeking statistics on guns and crime, not to address the divisive issues surrounding the gun debate.
Abstract
The package contains selected statistical tables from four major sources of national data: The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS); the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and the National Center for Health Statistics. The package also contains a matrix of Federal statistical data related to guns and crime and copies of the BJS reports Firearm Injury From Crime: Firearms, Crime, and Criminal Justice; Guns Used in Crime: Firearms, Crime, and Criminal Justice; guns and Crime; Weapons Offenses and Offenders: Firearms, Crime, and Criminal Justice; and Firearms and Crimes of Violence. Also included are copies of the National Institute of Justice's publications on Firearms and Violence; Gun Acquisition and Possession in Selected Juvenile Samples; Understanding and Preventing Violence: A Public Health Perspective; Arrestees and Guns: Monitoring the Illegal Firearms Market; and Youth Violence, Guns, and Illicit Drug Markets. Firearms-related data are also provided from the States of Hawaii, New York, and Virginia. Results of a topical search on guns and crime yielded the 30 most representative citations on homicide. Each title contains a full bibliographic citation, annotation, and abstract. Further, the package contains a list of additional resources on guns and crime, as well as a list of the Statistical Analysis Center and Uniform Crime Reporting Programs in each State. These contacts can provide assistance with obtaining State and local-level data on guns and crime.
