Following a description of the events underlying the founding of Handgun Control, Inc., this book considers why people own handguns, how handguns are controlled in other countries, and the politics influencing the handgun control debate.
Abstract
Initiated by the father of a handgun-murder victim, Handgun Control, Inc., rallies political support for reform in handgun-control laws. The author presents statistics on the injury and death that has resulted from handguns, the number of handguns in circulation in America, and the manufacture and distribution of handguns. He discusses why people own handguns and exposes the illusion of a handgun providing self-defense. The control of handguns in England, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Italy, France, Israel, and West Germany is portrayed. Arguing public support for handgun control, he examines the political influences obstructing the will of the majority, notably politicians' responses to the lobbying efforts of the National Rifle Association (NRA). Finally, he proposes a program to reduce handgun violence, based on control provisions of the Kennedy-Rodino Crime Control Act. Twelve bibliographic entries are provided.
