A STUDY OF THE EVOLUTION AND APPLICATION OF LAWS DIRECTED TOWARD HABITUAL CRIMINALS IN ENGLAND, INCLUDING A COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR LAWS IN OTHER COUNTRIES, TOGETHER WITH CASE STUDIES OF HABITUAL OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THE CONTENT, INTENT, AND ADMINISTRATION OF LAWS PROVIDING FOR PREVENTIVE DETENTION OF THE HABITUAL CRIMINAL ARE DISCUSSED. PATTERNS OF PRISON LIFE FOR THOSE IN PREVENTIVE DETENTION ARE DESCRIBED. THE RECORDS OF SOME THREE HUNDRED RECIDIVISTS AND HABITUAL CRIMINALS ARE ANALYZED IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH DATA FOR A FOLLOW UP STUDY THAT WOULD HELP DETERMINE GUIDELINES FOR DECISIONS AS TO WHEN TO RELEASE PRISONERS IN PREVENTIVE DETENTION.
