THE PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO PRESENT AN ANALYTIC DESCRIPTION OF RACE RELATIONS IN ONE PRISON BY IDENTIFYING THE CONDITIONS THAT MAINTAIN THE INTERPERSONAL STRUCTURE.
Abstract
THE FIRST CHAPTER SETS FORTH THE HYPOTHESIS: THAT RACE RELATIONS IN THE PRISON TODAY ARE RESULT OF BOTH PRISON REFORM AND BLACK NATIONALISM. CHAPTER 2 PRESENTS A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRISON SOCIAL STRUCTURE. CHAPTERS 3 THROUGH 5 ARE CONCERNED WITH THE INFORMAL COLLECTIVE ADAPTATIONS TO THE PRISON STRUCTURE MADE BOTH BY THE STAFF AND THE INMATES. THESE CHAPTERS FOCUS ON HOW REFORMS HAVE DECREASED THE POWER OF THE STAFF, AND ON RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN INFORMAL SOCIAL ORGANIZATION AMONG THE PRISONER. CHAPTERS 6 THROUGH 8 PRESENT AN ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF RACE UPON STAFF-INMATE RELATIONS AND RELATIONS AMONG THE PRISONERS. OF SPECIFIC CONCERN IN THESE CHAPTERS IS HOW RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN THE COLLECTIVE ADAPTATIONS MADE BY PRISONERS AFFECT INTERGROUP RELATIONS. FINALLY, CHAPTER 9 IS AN ANALYSIS HOW THE STRUCTURE OF RACE RELATIONS WAS DISRUPTED BY ONE EXTERNAL EVENT, THE RIOT AT ATTICA. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
