The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) of the National Institute of Justice is a source not only of scholarly works but of practical help to the police professional pressured to increase the effectiveness of existing programs or design new cost-effective approaches.
Abstract
NCJRS opens up the Nation's most recent police experience for examination by users and provides the latest findings of research. Material from NCJRS helped a Detroit police administrator to improve productivity in investigation. A supervisor in the St. Louis County Police Department (Missouri) used NCJRS material to develop an information network pertaining to warrant services and fugitive tracking. The NCJRS service in the latter case involved a 'custom search' through the 73,000 items in the document data base to find discussions of warrant services and fugitive tracking. From this search, a list of names of persons knowledgeable in computerized warrant service was compiled, and they are currently being contacted. NCJRS also has resources to provide help in writing police operations manuals, since through its up-to-date nationwide information on police operations. A booklet describing the wide range of conference and workshop services is also newly available on request from NCJRS. In addition to providing practical help for local law enforcement enterprises, NCJRS materials deal with crime control on the State, national, and international scenes as well. A summary of NCJRS services is provided along with the fees charged for each service.
