THE OFFICIAL CRIME STATISTICS OF HAMBURG, WEST GERMANY, FOR THE YEAR 1977 ARE REPORTED BY THE STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.
Abstract
THE ELECTRONICALLY PROCESSED DATA ENCOMPASS ALL CRIMES AND ATTEMPTED CRIMES AS WELL AS ALL REPORTED OFFENDERS. DEFINITIONS OF BASIC TERMINOLOGY AND ABBREVIATIONS, AS WELL AS A CATALOGUE OF CRIME TYPES AND THE REFERENCE NUMBERS USED FOR THEM ARE FURNISHED. AN OVERVIEW OF CRIME STATISTICS INDICATES THAT (1) THE TOTAL CRIME RATE HAS INCREASED 12.6 PERCENT FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR; (2) ABOUT 76 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL INCREASE IS IN THE THEFT CATEGORY; (3) THE HIGHER THEFT RATES RESULT FROM MORE FREQUENT REPORTING OF MINOR LOSSES; (4) VIOLENT CRIMES HAVE INCREASED BY 14.4 PERCENT; (5) THE FREQUENCY OF OFFENSES IS EVEN HIGHER WHEN THE DROP IN POPULATION IS CONSIDERED; (6) THE GREATEST NUMBER OF CRIMES OCCUR IN A SMALL, CENTRALLY LOCATED SECTION OF THE CITY CONTAINING THE PLEASURE CENTERS; (7) POLICE MANAGEMENT VARIES WIDELY IN THE DIFFERENT CITY SECTORS; (8) THE INCREASE IN VICTIMS AMOUNTS TO 8.2 PERCENT; AND (9) THE NUMBER OF CASES INVOLVING DAMAGES HAS INCREASED BY 13 PERCENT. FURTHERMORE, THE NUMBER OF CASES SOLVED BY THE POLICE HAS RISEN BY 7.1 PERCENT AND THE NUMBER OF SUSPECTS HAS ALSO INCREASED, BUT MORE FOR WOMEN THAN MEN. STATISTICS ARE LISTED FOR FREQUENCY OF SEPARATE CRIMES (MURDER, ROBBERY, RAPE, BODILY INJURY, DRUG OFFENSES, JUVENILES OFFENSES, WHITE COLLAR CRIMES, AND FEDERAL CRIMES), THE NUMBER OF CRIMES PER YEAR, THE INCREASE AND DECREASE IN CRIMES, AND THE NUMBER OF SOLVED CRIMES SINCE 1953. IN ADDITION TO TABULAR MATERIAL, MAPS, AND GRAPHS IN THE TEST, FIVE SERIES OF EXTENSIVE DATA TABLES ON CRIMINAL SUSPECTS, VICTIMS, AND CRIME COSTS ARE SUPPLIED. --IN GERMAN (KMD)
