This self-help guide for women, published by the New York State Department of Social Services, offers advice on steps to take when threatened or hit by members of their families or households.
Abstract
Women who are abused should immediately move out, go to an emergency shelter if necessary, save evidence, call the police, and go to court. The booklet addresses the individual concerns of women who are married/divorced with or without children, or never married, with or without children. It discusses court choices for Orders of Protection and how courts can help abused women. A section on family courts covers Temporary Orders of Protection, arrest warrants, probation interviews, petitions, summonses, court hearings, and enforcement of Orders of Protection. Criminal court proceedings are outlined. Women are advised on how to retain a lawyer and how to receive welfare and emergency assistance for families. A list of New York State agencies and organizations is included. 1 appendix
