Abstract
'CLASSIFICATION' AS USED IN THIS PRESENTATION IS A SPECIALIZED TERM WHICH REFERS TO THE TOTAL PROCESS WHEREBY AN INDIVIDUAL OFFENDER'S CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS ARE DETERMINED FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING PROGRAMS TO AID IN THE CORRECTION OF PARTICULAR ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR. 'TREATMENT' REFERS TO THE COMPREHENSIVE BATTERY OF SERVICES AND PROGRAMS PROVIDED IN THE LIGHT OF DIAGNOSED NEEDS DERIVED FROM CLASSIFICATION. THE OPENING CHAPTER PRESENTS THE EARLY HISTORY AND PHILOSPHY OF CORRECTIONS AND EXPLAINS THE TREND AND RATIONALE BEHIND THE CURRENT USE OF CLASSIFICATION. THEN FOLLOWS AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOTAL CLASSIFICATION PROCESS AND ITS PURPOSE. THE NEXT TWO CHAPTERS INTRODUCE THE IDEA AND EXPLAIN THE NEED FOR NEW USES AND APPLICATIONS OF CLASSIFICATION AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL. THREE CHAPTERS DEAL WITH CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS POINTS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND INSTITUTIONAL PROCESSES. THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR EVALUATING CLASSIFICATION EFFECTIVENESS AND MONITORING OFFENDERS IN THEIR REHABILITATION PROGRESS IS DISCUSSED IN ANOTHER CHAPTER, AND THE FINAL DISCUSSION INVOLVES INNOVATIVE IDEAS FOR COMMUNITY CLASSIFICATION IN THE FUTURE. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY, SUPPLEMENTING THE SUBJECT BIBLIOGRAPHIES AT THE END OF SOME CHAPTERS. (RCB)
