Abstract
Checklists, sample forms, equipment specifications, charts, and illustrations aid the community or business leader, law enforcement officer, and private security manager in determining levels of risk and equipment and policy needs. Building and neighborhood security are covered, with attention to architectural design and site layout. Material on equipment discusses the advantages and disadvantages of many types of building and street lighting, locks, key control systems, electric alarms, intrusion detection systems, and closed circuit television (CCTV) systems. The pros and cons of employing security guards are discussed, and a guard training checklist is provided. Fire prevention and safety measures, emergency and disaster planning techniques, and bomb threats management and bomb search techniques are covered. A section on management describes prevention principles, security budgeting, data collection, and statistical analysis methods for planning and measuring success. Management-by-objectives is considered the most effective system for administering security programs. The handbook also presents materials on community relations aspects of security programs, including handling the media and obtaining community support. A final section applies prevention and security principles to retail, cargo, bank, computer, hotel, campus, museum, library, and archive security. A guide to security services and products lists manufacturers and suppliers. A bibliography of about 90 references and an index are provided.
