Abstract
Pro-social modeling is a process by which practitioners such as social workers and psychologists act as a motivating role model to bring out the best in their clients. The practitioner engages the client in a relationship that actively reinforces pro-social behavior and attitudes and discourages antisocial behavior and attitudes. This book is divided into 10 chapters that offer support and practical guidance to practitioners and managers who want to develop and implement a pro-social practice. The chapters discuss: 1) Introduction - what is pro-social modeling; 2) Developing empathetic relationships and working in a solution-focused way; 3) Exploring the legitimate use of authority: roles, rules, values, expectations and rewards; 4) Assertive interaction and pro-social feedback; 5) Motivating the unwilling client; 6) Practical ways of helping people to change; 7) Taking a systematic, pro-social, collaborative approach to problem solving; 8) Responding the individual need and diversity; 9) Being a pro-social manager: becoming a pro-social organization; and 10) Pro-social modeling in practice. Five appendixes provide information on exercises to develop and embed pro-social modeling in teams. Figures, table, references, and index
